A formidable American amphibious assault ship is cutting through busy Southeast Asian shipping lanes on its way to bolster U.S. forces in the Middle East, where conflict with Iran simmers.

Maritime tracking data captured the USS Tripoli nearing Singapore’s Malacca Strait on Tuesday, a critical artery linking the Pacific and Indian Oceans that funnels a third of global trade.

CNN examined the live AIS signals, noting their unusual activation in these crowded waters, where the vessel logged speeds of about 35 kilometres per hour from the South China Sea’s fringes.

The 45,000-tonne Tripoli, based in Japan’s Sasebo, stretches 259 metres and operates like a compact aircraft carrier. It can carry up to 20 F-35B stealth fighters, a dozen MV-22 Osprey tiltrotors for swift troop drops, and landing craft for shore assaults.

This transit supports a Pentagon push to reinforce the region. The order dispatches the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, a 2,200-personnel rapid-response force from Okinawa, aboard the Tripoli.

“The Wall Street Journal reported that the additional Marines would be ferried by the Tripoli to the Middle East,” officials noted. The Pentagon ordered the unit to deploy, swelling U.S. ranks to roughly 50,000 troops under Central Command.

Such Marine units integrate command, infantry, aviation, and logistics for versatile missions including raids, evacuations, and special operations, as seen in past Yemen extractions and Pacific patrols per USNI News. A 17 March Reuters report flagged accompanying F-35 deployments and carrier groups in the Arabian Sea, responding to Iranian missile volleys against Israel.

Neither the 7th nor 5th Fleet responded to queries, and sources kept the Marines’ exact posting classified. Tracking platforms like MarineTraffic showed the ship’s trail from Okinawa on 11 March, with no confirmed escorts such as the USS New Orleans.

As Tehran pledges counterstrikes and allies like Britain contribute warships, Tripoli’s journey signals Washington’s intent to maintain dominance across chokepoints from the Strait of Hormuz to farther afield.
