The United States has launched a new wave of strikes against Iran after an American Apache helicopter was brought down over the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns that the regional conflict could widen despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.
U.S. Central Command said the operation began on Tuesday in response to what it described as an attack on the aircraft. Explosions were later reported along Iran’s southern coastline, including near Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Sirik. Iranian radar installations and air defence systems were among the reported targets.
“The mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression,” Centcom said. The helicopter’s two crew members were rescued after the incident and were not injured.
President Donald Trump confirmed their safety in a post on Truth Social while making clear that Washington intended to retaliate. “There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured,” Trump wrote. “Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”
American officials said an Iranian drone was involved, although it remained unclear whether the collision was deliberate. Iranian media acknowledged that the helicopter had gone down but said Tehran had not claimed responsibility.
The rescue operation involved an unmanned surface vessel operated by Task Force 59, a U.S. Navy unit based in Bahrain. The drone collected the crew members from the water and transported them to another location, where they were lifted aboard a helicopter. It was the first publicly confirmed use of such a vessel in a U.S. military rescue.
The renewed confrontation comes at a sensitive moment for efforts to contain the conflict. Trump had said negotiations with Iran were nearing a decisive stage and suggested that an agreement could be reached within days. He had also urged Israel and Iran to stop exchanging fire after both sides launched attacks over the weekend.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Tehran would respond to any further military action.
“Despite its defeats on the battlefield, the U.S. opted to test our determination,” Araghchi wrote on X. “Leave our region if you want to be safe.”
The escalation has also unfolded as Israeli forces continue to carry out strikes in southern Lebanon, further complicating efforts to prevent another cycle of retaliation across the region.
