Papua New Guinea (PNG) is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its independence on September 16, 2025. The golden jubilee will be marked nationwide with cultural events, festivals, and official ceremonies, reflecting half a century since gaining independence from Australia in 1975.

Port Moresby will be the centrepiece of the celebrations, beginning with a flag-raising ceremony at Independence Hill near the National Parliament House. The official theme, “Celebrate Our History, Inspire Our Future,” highlights PNG’s rich heritage and aspirations. The logo features symbols representing resilience, cultural identity, unity, and growth, with tourism recognised as a crucial sector since independence.

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) will be supported by military personnel from around ten countries, including New Zealand, Australia, and France. New Zealand Defence Force members are embedded with PNGDF for training and joint operations, showing deep regional ties.

Despite logistical challenges due to PNG’s terrain and infrastructure, organisers are confident the event will be a memorable display of national pride and international cooperation.

Alongside the celebrations, humanitarian missions will deliver aid to remote communities, demonstrating a shared commitment to welfare and security. Training programmes emphasise leadership, teamwork, and core values, strengthening partnerships in the region.

Prime Minister James Marape has called on all Papua New Guineans to unite and honour the sacrifices of the nation’s founders by working towards peace, democracy, and prosperity. To recognise outstanding contributions, the 50th Independence Anniversary King’s Medal, established by King Charles III, will be awarded in 2025.

Internationally, leaders such as New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon affirm continued support and partnership with PNG, particularly in health and education development.

Celebrations from September 2025 to 2026 will extend across PNG, featuring events like the Goroka Show and Rabaul Frangipani Festival, showcasing the country’s diverse cultures and landscapes.

Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary serves not only to commemorate its past but also to inspire progress, sustainability, and inclusiveness for the future.
