A man carrying a shotgun, handgun, and several knives rushed a security checkpoint outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday evening, leading to a brief but intense exchange of gunfire that left one officer wounded. U.S. Secret Service agents quickly brought the suspect under control at the Washington Hilton, allowing the safe evacuation of President Donald Trump and hundreds of attendees.

The disturbance erupted around 8:35 p.m. local time, just after White House Correspondents’ Association President Weija Jiang had delivered her opening remarks and guests began their first course. Trump, preparing for his debut speech as president at the long-standing event that bridges politicians and the press, found himself shielded by agents and escorted from the stage amid panic, with diners scrambling for cover beneath tables.

Authorities identified the 31-year-old suspect as Cole Allen from Torrance, California. Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll revealed during a late-night briefing that investigators had secured Allen’s hotel room, based on early findings suggesting he was a registered guest.

“We have secured a room here at the hotel,” Carroll said. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro added that the man faces arraignment on Monday.

Speaking from the White House briefing room, Trump commended the rapid response and noted the wounded officer was “saved by the fact that he was wearing obviously a very good bulletproof vest.”

“I just spoke to the officer, and he’s doing great,” the president said. He confirmed First Lady Melania Trump and top officials including Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., emerged unscathed.

Trump posted images of the subdued gunman on Truth Social and vowed to reschedule the dinner within 30 days. Reflecting on the bipartisan gathering, he observed unexpected solidarity. “This was an event dedicated to freedom of speech that was supposed to bring together members of both parties with members of the press. And in a certain way, it did, because the fact that they just unified, I saw a room that was just totally unified. It was, in one way, very beautiful.”

The attack echoes prior threats against Trump, such as a July 2024 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. Queried on his potential as a target, he replied, “I guess,” adding, “You know he’s in custody, and they’re asking him a lot of questions.” No further casualties occurred.
