Authorities in Belgium are investigating multiple drone sightings over the Kleine-Brogel military airbase during a recent weekend, with Defence Minister Theo Francken describing the flights as apparent surveillance missions.

Kleine-Brogel hosts the country’s largest military unit and plays a vital role in NATO’s nuclear deterrence, with unconfirmed reports suggesting the presence of U.S. nuclear weapons.

The drones, described as larger models flying at high altitudes, were chased by police helicopters and ground units but evaded capture despite attempts with drone jammers.

“They come to spy, to see where the F-16s are, where the munitions are, and other highly strategic things,” Francken said. The base houses F-16 fighter jets, soon to be replaced by advanced F-35s.

These drone incursions form part of a wider increase in aerial surveillance incidents over European military sites, aligning with concerns about airspace security amid heightened geopolitical tensions. Francken refrained from directly accusing Russia but noted the “motives are clear,” reflecting similar activities in other NATO countries.

Belgium has seen drone sightings over other military bases such as Elsenborn near the German border, amid growing efforts to improve counter-drone defences across Europe. Lithuania recently closed its border with Belarus following repeated airspace violations, displaying increased regional alertness.

The Belgian government is treating these incidents seriously and emphasising that drones are prohibited over military zones, indicating a push for enhanced measures to secure vital installations from emerging aerial threats.
