Smith & Caughey’s has disclosed the results of its staff consultation regarding the potential closure of its retail operations.
Auckland’s iconic department store previously announced that it was considering closure for good in early 2025, with changes in the retail landscape among other factors contributing to their financial struggles.
However, after taking into account feedback from staff and combining it with ideas being considered by the board, two potential options for the business’s future were identified.
The first option is to continue with the initial plan to completely cease all retail activities in 2025.
The second option would involve downsizing their operations, which includes closing the Newmarket store and reducing the size of the Queen Street store. This new format means staffing levels would also be adjusted accordingly to align with the downsized business.
Smith & Caughey’s stated that they are still consulting with staff regarding the second option and plan to reach a final decision by the end of next week.
“We have commenced a further consultation period with our staff on the second option and a potential path forward,” a spokesperson said.
“Our aim is to determine the outcome of the consultation by the end of next week; following this, we will provide a further update.”
Smith & Caughey’s has been a key retail player in Auckland for 144 years. The closure would result in job cuts, affecting the livelihoods of employees and their families. Moreover, Smith & Caughey’s plans would limit shopping options for residents, particularly those who value the unique offerings and customer service that the store provides.
