Motorsport Championship Brings In Sustainable Racing with Fossil-Free Fuel

motorsport championship brings in sustainable racing with fossil free fuel

The 2025 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship (CTFROC) is setting a new standard in motorsport, showcasing an exciting season that runs over five weekends in January and February.

One of the standout features of this year’s championship is its commitment to sustainability. With the backing of Toyota GAZOO Racing New Zealand (TGRNZ), all cars in the championship are running on 100% fossil-free fuel supplied by P1 Fuels for the second consecutive year.

The P1 fuels are produced in Belgium using entirely non-fossil, non-food-based materials, such as agricultural residues. This cleaner fuel not only boasts greater carbon efficiency but also seamlessly integrates into existing combustion engines without requiring modifications.

It emits 75% less CO2 compared to traditional fuels. A test program conducted in 2023 confirmed that cars using P1 fuel performed reliably and at competitive speeds.

“Toyota New Zealand and Toyota GAZOO Racing New Zealand are leading the way in junior categories by being the first FIA Formula Regional Championship to run with 100% fossil-free fuel,” TGRNZ Manager of Motorsport Nicolas Caillol said in a statement.

“It is key for us to keep enjoying the sport and developing young talent while keeping in mind reducing the impact of motorsport on the environment.”

The commitment to using fossil-free fuel aligns with Toyota NZ and TGRNZ’s broader sustainability initiatives.

As the 2024-25 season progresses, TGRNZ aims to deepen its commitment to sustainability while adapting new vehicles like the Toyota GR86 and striving for long-term carbon neutrality.

“Our goal is carbon neutrality with both of our domestic racing championships and to set new standards for environmentally conscious motorsport in New Zealand,” Caillol said.
