FoodStuffs North Island has received approval to build a 6,461-square-metre Pak’nSave in Takapuna, a suburb on Auckland’s North Shore.

This will be regarded as the largest new supermarket in New Zealand, slightly bigger than Pak’nSave’s previous project, the Highland Park store that opened earlier this year.

An Auckland Council spokesperson confirmed that the application was submitted in December last year and approved on June 12, 2025. The consent was sought by resource management consultants Bentley & Co.

The store will feature 197 underground car parks and an upper-level service yard for receiving deliveries.

To reduce the risk of flooding, the car park will be constructed on elevated ground, with the store’s trading and storage/service areas situated above it.

“To allow for the passive ventilation of the customer parking area, which is in part necessary due to the historic contamination on the site, the customer parking area will be enclosed with an aluminium mesh screen that will screen the parking from view from the street,” the application wrote.

Pedestrians will be able to enter from Des Swan Drive and Fred Thomas Drive, with a travellator transporting shoppers from Fred Thomas Drive up to the supermarket level.

In an earlier report, two Pak’nSave supermarkets—Silverdale and Mill St—admitted guilt to breaching the Fair Trading Act after the Commerce Commission filed charges against them in the Auckland District Court.

ComCom said the breaches involved inaccurate pricing and misleading promotions, which could have deceived consumers and infringed upon their rights.
