Newly released US intelligence documents have reignited one of the most contentious debates of the pandemic: how Covid-19 began.
The documents, released by U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard in one of her final actions in the role, include internal communications, whistleblower allegations and intelligence-related material from the government’s review into the virus’s origins.
Gabbard has argued the release shows Dr Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, had a greater role in discussions around the origins investigation than was previously known. She has accused Fauci and others of downplaying information that could have supported a lab-related origin theory.
The release has renewed political pressure around the issue, with supporters of the lab-leak theory arguing the documents highlight unanswered questions about US-funded research involving coronavirus studies in China.
However, the documents do not provide definitive evidence proving that Covid-19 originated from a laboratory incident or that Fauci controlled the government’s conclusions about the virus’s origins.
Reviews of the released material by analysts and fact-checkers have found that the documents show Fauci participated in discussions with intelligence and scientific officials, but do not demonstrate that he directed intelligence assessments, ordered analysts to reach particular conclusions or deliberately concealed the pandemic’s origins.
Fauci has repeatedly denied misleading Congress and has rejected claims that research supported by the National Institutes of Health met the definition of dangerous gain-of-function work linked to the creation of Covid-19.
One document from a June 2021 briefing shows Fauci discussed possible origins scenarios with CIA and other officials, including concerns that the rapid cleanup of the Huanan seafood market in
Wuhan may have removed evidence that could have helped investigators. He also suggested scientists who could contribute to the review.
The debate has continued in Washington, with lawmakers calling for further scrutiny of the pandemic response and the role of government agencies during the early stages of the outbreak.
The underlying question remains unresolved. Intelligence agencies have not reached a single definitive conclusion on whether Covid-19 emerged through natural transmission or a laboratory-related incident, with different agencies reaching different assessments based on available evidence.
Years after the pandemic began, the latest document release shows how much disagreement remains over the origins of Covid-19 — but it does not settle the question of how the virus first entered the human population.
