In a powerful and assertive inaugural address on January 20, 2025, President Trump laid out his vision for a revitalised America, declaring the dawn of a “golden age” under his leadership.

With a focus on reversing the perceived decline brought about by his predecessor’s policies, Trump highlighted national pride, unity, and a commitment to putting American interests first. His speech resonated with familiar themes from his campaign, including immigration reform and economic revival, while promising immediate executive actions intended to alter the nation’s trajectory.

Throughout his speech, Trump revisited key issues from his campaign, notably immigration and the economy, while continuing his criticism of the Justice Department and federal institutions.

“National unity is now returning to America and confidence and pride is soaring like never before,” Trump stated.

He emphasised that his administration would be driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence and success. “We will not forget our country, we will not forget our Constitution, and we will not forget our God,” he added.

In the aftermath of the inauguration, Trump is expected to initiate several executive actions.

Major Themes From Trump’s Inaugural Address

“The golden age of America begins right now”

Trump expressed optimism that under his leadership, the nation would regain its global respect and prosperity. “During every single day of the Trump administration, I will very simply put America first,” he stated.

He reiterated allegations that the Justice Department had been weaponised against him and declared that his foremost goal would be to foster a nation that is “proud, prosperous and free.”

Critique of National Conditions

The president swiftly turned to lamenting the state of the nation under his predecessor’s governance.

“My recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal…and to give the American people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy and indeed their freedom,” Trump said as he criticised both the education and healthcare systems in the U.S.

He also pointed to Hurricane Helene’s impact in western North Carolina as evidence of governmental failure in providing essential services. “From this moment on, America’s decline is over,” he concluded.

Reflection on Personal Challenges

In a brief mention, Trump addressed the assassination attempt against him during a campaign rally in July 2024. “I was saved by God to make America great again,” he expressed.

He framed this incident as part of ongoing efforts to thwart his return to power. “The journey to reclaim our republic has not been an easy one,” he said, highlighting that adversaries have sought to undermine both his life and freedom.

Plans for Immediate Executive Actions

During his inaugural address, Trump outlined various executive actions he plans to undertake immediately. Regarding immigration, he announced intentions to declare a national emergency at the southern border—an announcement that received enthusiastic applause from supporters present at the Capitol Rotunda.

He vowed to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy from his first term and end catch-and-release practices for migrants. Additionally, Trump stated he would deploy troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to counter what he described as an “invasion” and designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organisations.

“As commander in chief, I have no higher responsibility than to defend our country from threats and invasions,” he emphasised. The president also committed to directing Cabinet members to combat inflation and reduce costs while declaring a “national energy emergency.” His declaration of “We will drill, baby, drill” was met with cheers from attendees.

Moreover, Trump reiterated plans to impose tariffs on foreign nations that aim to benefit American citizens and announced intentions for an executive order against government censorship. He affirmed that under his administration there would be recognition of only two genders: male and female. Furthermore, he pledged to reinstate military personnel discharged due to COVID-19 vaccine objections along with back pay.

Geopolitical Ambitions: Gulf of Mexico and Panama Canal

Trump confirmed plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America while indicating intentions to revert Denali back to its previous name—Mount McKinley—despite opposition from Alaska’s Republican senators who favour keeping its current designation.

He also noted ambitions for U.S. control over the Panama Canal. “We’re taking it back,” he asserted.

Vision for Space Exploration

In an ambitious vision for space exploration, Trump announced plans for U.S. astronauts to land on Mars. “We will pursue our Manifest Destiny into the stars.”

This statement received approval from tech billionaire Elon Musk, who was present at the event alongside other industry leaders.

Trump’s second inaugural address laid out a vision filled with national pride and assertiveness across various domains while detailing specific policy directions for his upcoming term.
