St. Kevin’s Arcade Celebrates 100 Years

st kevin’s arcade celebrates 100 years

One of Auckland’s oldest shopping centres, St. Kevin’s Arcade, has turned 100 years old.

Historical Significance

Before the establishment of St. Kevin’s Arcade, the site was home to St. Kevin’s House, an expansive estate featuring meandering gardens and tennis courts. This property was occupied by the Nathan family until 1918, after which it was demolished in 1920. Prior to their departure, the Nathans generously donated a strip of land to facilitate access from K’ Road to Myers Park; this very strip now hosts the renowned St. Kevin’s Arcade.

Constructed in 1924, the arcade emerged during a period of economic prosperity, positioning K’ Road as Auckland’s premier shopping destination. The area boasted numerous stores along the ridgeline, while St. Kevin’s Arcade became a hub for some of Auckland’s finest tailors, dressmakers, tea rooms, and photography studios.

“With the introduction of the inner-city motorway and suburban malls in the 1960’s, K’ Road and the surrounding area lost its appeal. But today, inner-city living is making a comeback. More and more Millennials and Baby Boomers are choosing to live in the central city, bringing further vibrancy and energy to the area,” St. Kevin’s Arcade said on its website.

St. Kevin’s 100-Year House Party

The centenary celebration kicked off with a vibrant house party on September 28, which included various events designed to engage both locals and visitors.

Key events include:

Time Capsule Project

Visitors were invited to contribute their memories, drawings, or future wishes to a time capsule.

Live Art Sketching

Participants could join for a live drawing session, capturing the unique architectural features of the arcade.

Historical Audio Tours

Guided audio tours were offered, providing insights into the arcade’s history and its significance in Auckland’s cultural landscape.

Throwback Thursday Night Market

A nostalgic market was established, showcasing local independent creatives and designers, further enriching the celebratory atmosphere.

Many have also shared their greetings, wishes, and fond memories of St. Kevin’s Arcade:

“Happy birthday to your local St. Kevin’s Arcade in the heart of Karangahape Road,” Auckland City Centre Residents’ Group said in its Facebook post

“The people that we’ve met here have basically become like whānau,” Jono Thevenard, owner of the pasta and wine restaurant Pici, said.

“We’ve got so many people on the street that are so different, and we all support each other, and we all come together.”
