This morning, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon had his first conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump since Trump’s re-election last week.
Luxon described the call as “very positive, very warm.” He also highlighted that Trump displayed an “obvious” respect for New Zealand during the phone call, which lasted 10-15 minutes.
“Good to speak with President-elect @realDonaldTrump this morning to congratulate him on his historic election victory,” Luxon said on X.
“New Zealand and the United States have a strong and enduring partnership,” he added.
Both leaders acknowledged the significance of strengthening the relationship between the two nations.
“I look forward to doing just that,” Luxon stated.
The conversation also included the economic difficulties facing their countries and ongoing global conflicts, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East.
“It was really just a relational chance to say hello. We committed we would catch up in person at some future forum.”
Donald Trump achieved a decisive victory over Kamala Harris when Americans cast their votes last Wednesday.
