Labour MP Arena Williams has raised serious concerns about the fast-tracking of Winton Land Limited’s Sunfield project, alleging potential “cronyism” and financial gains for the company at taxpayers’ expense.

The Sunfield development, located in Ardmore, south of Auckland, is a large-scale project that includes plans for 3,400 residential units, a school, and three retirement villages. This project has been approved for fast-track processing under recent legislation, which has sparked controversy due to its connections to political donations.

The controversy stems from substantial political donations made by Winton’s director, Christopher Meehan, and associated entities. Meehan donated $50,000 to ACT in 2023 and $103,260 to National. Additionally, Speargrass Holdings, where Meehan is a director, contributed $52,894 to National in 2022. In total, entities related to the Sunfield project donated $206,154.23 to right-wing parties.

The situation has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest, particularly as Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop declared a conflict regarding the Sunfield development and transferred the decision to Simeon Brown.

Bishop had previously issued a statement supporting Meehan’s case against Kāinga Ora while in opposition, about five months after receiving a donation from Speargrass Holdings.

Arena Williams’ characterisation of the situation as “cronyism” shows concerns about the relationship between political donations and government decision-making. Her claim that Winton stands to gain “tens of millions of dollars” of taxpayers’ money through the fast-tracking process displays the financial implications of these decisions.

This highlights the ongoing debate about the influence of political donations on government policy and the need for transparency in the fast-track approval process for major development projects.
