Electricity Authority Proposes Rule Changes for Easier Network Connections

electricity authority proposes rule changes for easier network connections

The Electricity Authority is set to reform market rules to facilitate easier connections to the distribution network for businesses and consumers.

According to Tim Sparks, the Electricity Authority’s network pricing director, the existing regulations have become outdated due to the increasing complexity and volume of connection applications. Sparks emphasised that these changes aim to streamline access for various entities, including manufacturers, data centres, new housing developments, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Currently, electricity distribution companies have the autonomy to establish their own pricing rules for connection requests, resulting in inconsistent practices across New Zealand and often leading to high up-front costs for applicants.

Sparks noted that the proposed rule changes will promote more efficient investments, thereby benefiting consumers through reduced overall electricity costs.

The Electricity Authority plans to engage with stakeholders over the next eight weeks to gather input on how best to implement these reforms. The goal is to establish new standards by mid-next year.
