The expansion of data centres, driven by the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing, has led to a surge in power requirements. By 2029, the sector’s power demand is anticipated to double, according to forecasts by JLL, which stresses the urgency for sustainable energy practices.
In this context, solar power has emerged as a leading choice for powering these facilities, thanks to its proven technology, deployment capabilities, and cost-effectiveness.
Solar energy offers several benefits that make it an attractive option for data centres. Despite its intermittency, which means it only generates electricity when sunlight is available, solar power is a proven technology with a relatively short deployment time—typically around 18 months.
Unlike nuclear reactors, which are still in the experimental phase for commercial use, and new natural gas plants, which require years to construct, solar farms can be completed quickly. Moreover, solar power is one of the most cost-effective forms of new generating capacity, often surpassing other sources except for onshore wind.
In recent months, several major tech companies have signed significant solar deals. For instance, Meta has secured multiple agreements for solar farms in Texas and other locations. Microsoft and Amazon have also made substantial investments in solar energy, aligning with their commitments to power operations using zero-carbon energy.
Beyond the U.S., data centre operators in regions like India and South America are also embracing solar power. In India, CtrlS has developed a 125-megawatt solar facility, while Telecom Argentina has agreed to purchase electricity from a 130-megawatt solar farm in South America.
With AI continuing to drive data centre growth, solar power is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the sector’s energy demands. Its integration with advanced cooling systems and energy storage technologies will further enhance its appeal. Moreover, emerging trends such as microgrids and modular designs could transform how data centres manage power, ensuring a sustainable and efficient future for the industry.
Solar power is not only a viable solution for data centres but a necessary one, given the sector’s quick expansion and the imperative for sustainability.
