Stantec has completed the acquisition of Christchurch-headquartered Cosgroves, strengthening its presence in New Zealand’s engineering sector through the addition of more than 90 staff. The expansion aligns with Stantec’s goal to be known across Australasia, fortifying their footprint in key sectors such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and data centres.

Stantec Expands Engineering Expertise

The deal builds on Stantec’s strategy to expand across Australasia, with a focus on healthcare, data centres, and advanced manufacturing. Cosgroves, with nearly 30 years in the industry, strengthens Stantec’s offering in fire, mechanical, electrical, and sustainability engineering.

“Our two firms have shared values and a history of working together, and our complementary strengths will support our strategic plan in a key region we’ve identified as a core area for growth,” said Gord Johnston, president and CEO of Stantec.

Carrying Cosgroves’ Legacy Forward

Cosgroves has established a nearly 30-year track record in sustainable consulting engineering, contributing to high-profile projects such as the Christchurch Town Hall and facilities for Canterbury District Health Board. Its experience spans both public and private sectors.

Founding director Brady Cosgrove described the acquisition as “a significant opportunity for growth,” noting, “In joining Stantec, we are positioning ourselves to capitalise on increased investments through our local relationships and Stantec’s international experience, while providing our staff with expanded opportunities to work on national and international projects.”

Reaching Global Scale to Strengthen Local Capacity

Stantec’s acquisition strategy in New Zealand has been consistent in recent years. The company has already absorbed firms such as Cardno, Traffic Design Group (TDG), and MWH, building a strong regional presence. They also acquired Australian buildings engineering firm Wood & Grieve Engineers in 2019.

The latest acquisition reinforces the trend of foreign direct investment supporting New Zealand’s infrastructure goals without undermining national capability. With the combined team now positioned to benefit from increased public spending in healthcare over the next decade.
