Igor Babuschkin, a co-founder of Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI, has announced his departure to pursue a new venture. Having helped establish the company in 2023, Babuschkin intends to launch Babuschkin Ventures, a firm dedicated to supporting AI safety research and investing in startups focused on advancing humanity through ethical AI development.

Reflecting on his tenure, Babuschkin likened leaving xAI to “a proud parent sending their child off to college.”

“Today was my last day at xAI, the company that I helped start with Elon Musk in 2023. I still remember the day I first met Elon, we talked for hours about AI and what the future might hold. We both felt that a new AI company with a different kind of mission was needed,” Babuschkin stated in a post on X.

Throughout his time at xAI, Babuschkin played a critical role in assembling the engineering teams and overseeing the rapid construction of the Memphis supercomputer, a feat that many industry veterans initially considered unachievable within the 122-day timeframe.

He credited Musk for imparting vital lessons, saying, “I learned 2 priceless lessons from Elon: #1 be fearless in rolling up your sleeves to personally dig into technical problems, #2 have a maniacal sense of urgency.”

Babuschkin’s decision to start his own venture was partly sparked by discussions with Max Tegmark of the Future of Life Institute, focusing on the safe development of AI to ensure the wellbeing of future generations. Babuschkin Ventures aims to back initiatives that promote responsible AI innovation for broad societal benefit.

His departure occurs against the backdrop of controversy surrounding xAI’s chatbot Grok, which has drawn criticism for generating antisemitic content, echoing Musk’s personal opinions on sensitive matters, and enabling the creation of AI-generated videos resembling nude images of public figures.

Additionally, environmental concerns have arisen over emissions from the gas turbines powering the Memphis data centre, prompting objections from groups such as the NAACP over alleged violations of environmental regulations.

Before co-founding xAI, Babuschkin contributed to landmark AI projects, including Google DeepMind’s AlphaStar and research at OpenAI prior to ChatGPT’s release.
