Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is scheduled to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their first encounter in Vientiane, Laos just prior to a gala dinner for the East Asia Summit (EAS).

This meeting aims to strengthen the bilateral relationship and explore shared interests between New Zealand and India. During Luxon’s visit to Laos, he will also participate in a joint session with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, where they are expected to address a variety of global issues.

In July, the prime ministers of all three Commonwealth countries issued a joint statement regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, advocating for an international ceasefire. The statement emphasised, “The situation in Gaza is catastrophic. Human suffering is unacceptable. It cannot continue.”

The Israel-Hamas conflict has emerged as a significant issue in Southeast Asia. According to the 2024 State of Southeast Asia (SEA) survey, which gathered responses from government officials, academics, and civil society members, the levels of concern among respondents were notably high: 83.1% in Malaysia, 79.2% in Brunei, 74.7% in Indonesia, and 57.9% in Singapore.

Additional bilateral meetings were planned during Luxon’s first day in the capital, including discussions with Laos’ Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and Vietnamese leader Pham Minh Chinh.
