President Donald Trump has authorised the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to Chicago to address what he calls escalating crime and unrest. The decision follows violent clashes during immigration enforcement protests, including an incident where an armed woman was shot after vehicles were used to ram law enforcement.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker strongly condemned the deployment, calling it an unnecessary political stunt and refusing to order the state National Guard into service, despite pressure from the federal government. Pritzker labelled the move “un-American” and accused Trump of trying to manufacture a crisis.

This deployment comes as part of a wider pattern of controversial troop sendings to mostly Democratic-led cities such as Washington DC, Los Angeles, Memphis, and Portland. However, a federal judge in Oregon recently blocked the deployment of 200 troops to Portland, ruling it unconstitutional and warning that such military action without state consent risks violating state sovereignty and escalating tensions.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson defended the move in Chicago, saying that federal forces are needed to protect officers and property amid ongoing violent protests that local leaders have failed to control.

While Chicago has seen a decline in violent crime over the past year, it remains higher than many U.S. cities, with multiple shootings reported during recent holiday weekends.

The legal and constitutional debate over these federal deployments continues to grow, raising questions about the limits of presidential power and the role of the military in managing domestic unrest.
