Canva, the design platform, is implementing significant price increases for certain customers, partially attributing this decision to generative AI advancements.
In the United States, some subscribers to Canva Teams who are on older pricing plans will see the annual cost for a five-person plan surge from $119.99 to $500 (though a 40% discount is available for the first year). In Australia, the flat fee of $39.99 AUD (approximately $26) per month for up to five users has been increased to $13.50 AUD per user.
For individual users, Canva Teams pricing is now set at $100 per person, or $10 per month per person, with a minimum requirement of three individuals for a Teams plan. These pricing adjustments were made earlier this year for new customers, but the company is now revising prices for existing customers who had previously enjoyed lower rates.
These changes do not affect Canva’s Pro or Enterprise tiers.
Moreover, a Canva representative confirmed the new pricing and highlighted the company’s expanding range of generative AI tools—including Magic Studio—as a factor in the adjustments. They also mentioned that some customers had been benefiting from lower prices that are no longer available. Canva had quietly adjusted its Teams pricing earlier this year to $10 per month for each user.
“Our original pricing reflected the early stage of this product and has remained unchanged for the last four years,” the representative said. “We’re now updating the price for customers on this older plan to reflect our expanded product experience.”
The recent price increases, which coincide with Canva’s preparations for an IPO, have not been well received. Users expressed particular dissatisfaction with the fact that Canva communicated these changes via customer emails rather than through public announcements, as it has done previously.
This new pricing strategy displays Canva’s original position as a cost-effective alternative to design software like Adobe. It may also indicate that the startup is expanding too rapidly. In March, Canva acquired the U.K.-based graphic design software company Serif for approximately $380 million and, just last month, purchased the generative AI image company Leonardo.
