AT&T Confirms Data Breach Affecting “Nearly All” Customers

Multinational telecommunications holding company AT&T has announced a massive data breach, virtually affecting “nearly all” of its cellular customers.

The company has reported that customer data was illegally downloaded from a third-party cloud platform, Snowflake. The stolen data includes phone call and text message records of customers from May 1, 2022, to October 31, 2022. Records from January 2, 2023, for a very small number of customers were also compromised.

The company also confirmed that call records of customers using phone services from other cell carriers that rely on AT&T’s network have been affected by the breach.

AT&T assures customers that the stolen data “does not contain the content of calls or texts,” time stamps, dates of birth, Social Security number, and other personal information, but includes call and text records that an AT&T phone number contacted within the six-month period, the total number of a customer’s calls and texts, and call durations. However, the company warns that “while the data doesn’t include customer names, there are often ways to find a name associated with a phone number using publicly available online tools.”

AT&T spokesperson Andrea Huguely said it will reach out to its 110 million customers regarding the data breach. The telecom giant also published a statement on its website, disclosing details about the incident as well as the steps that the company is currently taking to resolve the issue.

“We hold ourselves to a high standard and commit to delivering the experience that you deserve. We constantly evaluate and enhance our security to address changing cybersecurity threats and work to create a secure environment for you. We invest in our network’s security using a broad array of resources, including people, capital, and innovative technology advancements,” AT&T said.

AT&T is the latest company to confirm that it had data stolen from Snowflake, following Ticketmaster in June.
