Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will travel to Australia this week for the annual leaders’ meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, as the two countries work to deepen economic cooperation, strengthen trans-Tasman business ties, and advance shared interests in a rapidly changing Indo-Pacific region.
Luxon said Australia remains New Zealand’s only formal ally and most important economic partner.
He noted that many New Zealanders live and work across it, while Australia continues to be a favourite holiday destination for Kiwis.
The Prime Minister will depart for Australia on Friday and return on Saturday.
He said it is vital that New Zealand and Australia continue working closely together in an increasingly volatile and uncertain world, particularly as both countries confront fuel security concerns, supply chain disruptions, and broader economic challenges.
Ahead of his talk with Albanese, Luxon will meet with Queensland Premier David Crisafulli and representatives of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Committee.
Luxon said Queensland’s preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games present important opportunities for New Zealand businesses to showcase their expertise and compete for contracts.
“I’m looking forward to discussing this with Premier Crisafulli and the Committee,” Luxon added.
