“All good things must come to an end,” said Red Square Bar, a long-standing fixture in Wellington’s hospitality scene for more than 20 years, as it announced it will be closing its doors.
The nightclub confirmed it will close its doors on May 30, saying it is determined to make its final three weekends “our biggest and best yet.”
The announcement was shared on the bar’s social media pages, where Red Square said it has been a “huge part of Wellington’s nightlife” for an “incredible” 23 years.
“To every person who has ever walked through our doors, thank you,” the bar said.
“To our loyal regulars who have become a second family, thank you – this place would never have been what it was without you.”
They also thanked their staff for the “countless late nights, hard work, energy, and passion” they’ve put in over the years, saying Red Square has always been “only as special as the people behind it.”
Red Square’s closure comes just over a month after another Wellington hospitality favourite, Havana Bar, was put on the market after 23 years in business.
The news of Red Square’s closure has been met with widespread sadness, with many people sharing memories of nights spent there over the years.
One person said the news made them feel sick, while another described their heart as broken.
