Wendy’s is undertaking a restructuring in the U.S. market, planning to close hundreds of its outlets as part of efforts to reverse a downturn in performance.

Ken Cook, the firm’s interim CEO, disclosed on Friday that the closures would affect a mid-single-digit percentage of the approximately 6,000 Wendy’s restaurants nationwide, amounting to around 200 to 350 sites.

The decision targets branches that have consistently struggled to meet expectations and have had a detrimental impact on the chain’s overall results. This process of shutting underperforming locations will begin before the close of 2025 and continue into 2026.

Cook explained that this measure aims to strengthen the network, allowing franchisees to direct more investment and resources into their remaining, better-performing premises.

“Closures of underperforming units are expected to boost sales and profitability at nearby locations,” he stated. A detailed list of the affected outlets has not been disclosed.

This follows a similar round of closures last year when Wendy’s announced it would shut 140 restaurants due to comparable performance issues. The chain is attempting to regain its competitive edge after reporting another disappointing quarter in which same-store sales in the U.S. fell by 4.7%.

This contrasts with rival chains including McDonald’s, Burger King, and Shake Shack, which all reported growth, aided by successful promotional campaigns and appealing customer offers.

Despite the setbacks, Wendy’s has found cause for optimism with the launch of its new chicken tenders, branded “Tendys.” The product quickly gained strong demand, with some locations selling out even prior to any formal advertising.

“We’re looking forward to continuing that momentum, and this is an encouraging first step as we look to reestablish our leadership position in chicken,” Cook said.

This adjustment will allow Wendy’s to do more to improve customer experience and innovate its menu across its remaining restaurants.
