Google Labs has launched Mixboard, an AI-powered tool designed to help users visualise and develop creative ideas. This new platform allows individuals to assemble mood boards for various uses such as interior design, event planning, DIY projects, and much more, combining both visual and textual elements for a seamless creative experience.

Unlike traditional mood board applications that require users to have a library of images, Mixboard enables users to begin projects simply by entering text prompts, with the AI generating corresponding images.

For those seeking inspiration, the app offers pre-designed boards that can be personalised and adjusted according to the user’s vision. Users may also upload their own images to incorporate into their boards.

A key innovation in Mixboard is the integration of Google’s Nano Banana image editing model. This model excels at editing images through natural language commands, allowing users to make subtle changes, merge visuals, or generate variations with exceptional realism. The capacity to “regenerate” or request “more like this” further allows for quick iteration and exploration of creative ideas. The AI also enhances the experience by generating descriptive text inspired by the images on the mood boards.

This initiative aligns with the increasing popularity of digital mood boards among younger generations. Pinterest’s success with its standalone collage app, Shuffles, which gained popularity with Gen Z users and later influenced Pinterest’s main platform, helped shape this space.

Other ventures include the now discontinued Startup Landing and the AI-based Verse app, both aimed to enrich creative processes. More recently, Depop introduced a collage-making tool geared towards helping fashion enthusiasts style and promote their collections.

Mixboard is currently in public beta, available to users in the United States through Google Labs. A dedicated Discord community supports users with engagement and assistance, fostering a collaborative environment.
