Elon Musk has stepped up his opposition to President Donald Trump’s flagship tax and spending legislation, delivering some of his most pointed criticism yet and openly challenging the Republican Party’s direction.

The billionaire entrepreneur, who has previously been a major donor to conservative causes, took to his social media platform X to denounce the bill as “DEBT SLAVERY” and to call out lawmakers who support it, insisting that the measure represents a betrayal of fiscal responsibility.

Musk’s intervention comes as the U.S. Senate debates the sweeping legislation, which Trump and Republican leaders are eager to push through before the summer recess. The bill, which would raise the federal debt ceiling by $5 trillion and extend tax cuts originally introduced during Trump’s first term, has drawn sharp criticism from fiscal conservatives and business leaders.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the measure could add more than $3 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade—a projection that has only fuelled the controversy.

The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive, who reportedly contributed nearly $290 million to Republican campaigns during the 2024 election cycle, has not only criticised the bill’s scale but has also threatened political retribution against its supporters.

“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!” Musk posted on X. He further warned, “And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

Musk’s comments have resonated with a segment of the Republican base that feels alienated by recent policy shifts. He has renewed his call for a new political party, arguing that the two main parties no longer represent the interests of ordinary citizens.

“It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS that we live in a one-party country – the PORKY PIG PARTY!!” he wrote, adding, “Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people.”

Beyond the headline figures, Musk has also taken issue with specific provisions in the bill that would impact his business interests. The Senate’s version includes the elimination of federal subsidies for wind and solar projects after 2027 and the rollback of clean energy credits, while introducing new incentives for coal production.

These changes could significantly affect Tesla’s energy division, which relies on government support for solar and battery projects. Musk has described these moves as “utter madness” and warned of their potential to undermine American competitiveness in renewable energy.

The political fallout from Musk’s statements has been immediate. Some Republican lawmakers, particularly those in the conservative Freedom Caucus, have faced backlash for supporting the bill. Musk singled out Representatives Andy Harris of Maryland and Chip Roy of Texas, both known for their hard-line stances, for not opposing the legislation. The billionaire’s threats to fund primary challengers could have a notable impact, especially in House races where campaign spending can sway outcomes.

The dispute between Musk and Trump has become emblematic of deeper divisions within the Republican Party. While Trump has attempted to downplay the rift, describing Musk as “a wonderful guy who got a little bit upset,” the ongoing war of words suggests a more profound disagreement over the party’s future direction.
