Travellers gained improved parking access today as Wellington Airport officially launched its new eastern-side car park, adding over 800 vehicle spaces.
Wellington Airport chief executive Matt Clarke explains that the new car park is essential to compensate for parking spaces lost due to ongoing projects around the airport precinct and to ensure flexibility for future developments.
“We’ve lost a number of parks in other parts of the precinct due to projects like Wellington City Council’s new sludge minimisation facility,” he said.
The new car park has been constructed on land previously owned by Miramar Golf Club, which Wellington Airport purchased in 2019.
However, the airport only gained full possession of the site on January 1, 2025, as stipulated in the sale agreement.
“This new car park will make parking at the airport even easier for passengers, alongside other travel options like the Airport Express bus, taxis and Ubers.”
“At the airport we’re big fans of straight lines and smooth tarmac, and this new layout is a beauty,” chief executive Clarke added.
Meanwhile, future development plans remain open-ended. No immediate decisions have been made regarding the use of the remaining land adjacent to the new car park, with any potential developments expected to be phased in incrementally over the coming years.
In the future, the airport is expected to develop a new landscape buffer zone along Bunker Way’s eastern boundary, requiring public consultation.
The project is expected to introduce appealing green spaces, potentially incorporating walking paths, sculptures, and fresh plantings based on the airport’s Landscape Visual Management Plan.
