President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday evening that the United States plans to “take over the Gaza Strip,” asserting that “we’ll own it.” He suggested that nearly 2 million Palestinians currently living in Gaza should relocate to other Middle Eastern countries, including Jordan and Egypt.
Trump proposed a redevelopment plan for Gaza, which has been heavily damaged due to conflict with Israel. Describing it as a “hellhole,” he expressed his vision for transforming Gaza into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
“This could be so magnificent,” he stated.
During a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he emphasised the potential for improvement in the region.
Netanyahu responded positively to Trump’s suggestion, saying that “it’s something that could change history,” and deemed it worth pursuing.
Trump reiterated his commitment to managing Gaza’s reconstruction. “The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,” he added.
He outlined plans for dismantling unexploded ordnance and clearing destroyed structures to create jobs and housing for local residents. “Do a real job, do something different,” he urged.
As negotiations continue regarding a second phase of a ceasefire plan for Gaza, questions remain about the future of the territory. Earlier on Tuesday, Trump expressed scepticism about Palestinians returning to their homes.
“They’re living like hell. They have no alternative,” he said. He also indicated he is working to persuade neighbouring countries to accept hundreds of thousands of refugees from Gaza.
His remarks have sparked controversy and are likely to provoke strong reactions from Palestinian leaders. Hamas has vowed to resist any proposals for relocation, saying that Palestinians view Gaza as their historical homeland. The ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread destruction across Gaza, with notable displacement of civilians.
Despite Trump’s claims that Palestinians would welcome relocation from Gaza—describing it as a “demolition site”—many view such proposals as forced displacement. Palestinian organisations and international bodies have condemned these suggestions.
