A group of U.S. Congress members made a rare visit to Beijing to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Meeting with China’s Premier Li Qiang, they stressed the importance of renewing dialogue after years of strained relations and limited contact.

This was the first official visit by a U.S. House of Representatives delegation to China since 2019, as the COVID-19 pandemic and rising mistrust halted exchanges. The trip follows a recent call between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, showing efforts to manage ongoing disputes over issues like semiconductor technology, TikTok’s ownership, South China Sea activity, and Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Premier Li described the visit as a chance to “break the ice” and improve bilateral ties, according to the U.S. embassy.

Democratic Representative Adam Smith, leading the delegation, noted, “We can both acknowledge that both China and the U.S. have work to do to strengthen that relationship, which should not be, what, seven, six years between visits from the U.S. House of Representatives.”

In recent years, U.S. lawmakers have focused on other areas, including visits to Taiwan, which Beijing views as a breakaway province. High-profile congressional trips to Taiwan in 2022 and 2023 triggered strong Chinese military responses and sanctions.

While progress is expected to be gradual, experts agree that ongoing dialogue is vital to managing competition and reducing risks in this critical relationship.
