Uber has introduced a new service tailored to improve the ride-hailing experience for older adults by launching Senior Accounts, currently available in the United States.

This feature provides a simplified app interface designed specifically for elderly users, featuring larger text, clearer instructions, and fewer on-screen options to minimise confusion. The move is part of Uber’s strategy to promote accessibility and mobility for an ageing population, which is expected to make up nearly one in six people worldwide by 2030.

Senior Accounts are part of Uber’s Family Profiles, enabling family members to assist older relatives by managing payment methods, booking rides on their behalf, and receiving live updates on trips.

Family organisers can also communicate directly with drivers during journeys, adding an extra layer of security and convenience. Seniors benefit from the ability to save frequently visited locations such as medical centres or family homes, making the booking process quicker and more straightforward.

For those who wish to maintain independence, Uber offers Simple Mode, an optional setting that provides the same easy-to-use interface without requiring connection to a Family Profile. Users can activate this mode through the app’s accessibility settings, which presents larger icons and text alongside a decluttered screen.

In terms of payment flexibility, Senior Account holders can use their own card, a family member’s card, or a Medicare Flex card—a prepaid debit card provided under Medicare Advantage plans for eligible medical appointments. This aims to reduce obstacles to accessing essential healthcare and daily transportation.

Setting up a Senior Account is straightforward: a family member adds the older adult to their Family Profile via the Uber app, and the senior receives a text message with instructions to download the app and create their account. Once set up, seniors can request rides independently or with family support.

Following its launch in the U.S., Uber plans to roll out Senior Accounts and Simple Mode internationally, targeting markets including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mexico, France, and South Africa, though no specific dates have been announced.

This initiative builds on Uber’s previous introduction of teen accounts, which similarly cater to younger users with tailored app experiences.

“Senior accounts and Simple mode represent an important milestone in Uber’s ongoing commitment to accessible transportation. These features reflect our dedication to designing technology that meets people where they are and supports mobility at every stage of life,” said Ashu Manohar, Uber’s director of product management.
