The Trump administration has pulled nearly $8 billion in climate funding from states mostly led by the Democratic Party, a senior official confirmed on Wednesday. This move reduces federal support for environmental projects in those regions.
Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, announced the cuts shortly after revealing that about $18 billion for two major infrastructure projects in New York City had been frozen. Vought, in a post on social media platform X, called the funding “Green New Scam” money aimed at advancing “the Left’s climate agenda.”

He said the U.S. Department of Energy would provide more details. The affected states include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.
These states voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, though Donald Trump won the Electoral College. Analysts see the cuts as politically motivated and warn they could impede progress on clean energy and infrastructure improvements.
The funding pause, combined with the government shutdown, also delays key urban projects in places like New York City.
