The family-run HealthPost, founded in the late 1980s by Linley Butler, has grown into a transtasman natural health retailer, reporting $30 million in annual revenue and a product catalogue of 15,000 items.

Abel Butler said consumer attitudes have changed dramatically since his mother began the company. “Even natural health as a category was relatively novel. I think the concept of conscious consumption was really quite nascent and hadn’t hit the mainstream,” he said.

“We’re making it easier for customers to make mindful and considered choices that they can be confident in… If we stock it, they can be confident that it already meets a number of standards which we’re transparent about.”

HealthPost acquired Australian retailers Flora & Fauna and Nourished Life in May 2023, whose parent company had gone into receivership. Butler said the challenge was to rebuild credibility: “The brands had suffered quite a bit of reputational damage, so the first thing that we had to do is restore trust in them.”

Sales in Australia have grown 15 per cent month on month since the purchase, with profitability expected this year. Butler credited the turnaround to focusing on “doing all of the basics very well.”

The company operates in a crowded sector that includes boutique retailers, independent pharmacies, and giants such as Chemist Warehouse. Butler said HealthPost’s edge lies in supply chain discipline and systems honed over years. “The supply chain and logistics are really complex… We have really good systems that we’ve built up over many years of experience.”

He also sees an advantage in Australia, where health trends emerge earlier than in New Zealand.

Butler said e-commerce technology and artificial intelligence will shape how the company delivers “world-class customer experiences.” HealthPost also maintains B-Corp and zero-carbon certification and has pledged long-term support for ecological restoration in Golden Bay.
