TikTok has started testing TikTok Notes on selected Android and iOS users in Australia and Canada.

TikTok Notes, a reportedly direct competitor of Instagram, focuses on sharing photos and texts, diverging from TikTok’s signature looping videos. Similar to Instagram, users can post and edit multiple images. However, TikTok Notes offers a recommendation-based “For You” page and another feed for accounts that a user follows.

TikTok Notes will also allow users to publish posts with headlines and captions of up to 4,000 characters, almost doubling Instagram’s 2,200 character limit.

Moreover, the homepage of TikTok Notes resembles the layout of Pinterest, albeit with a more compact, two-column grid. It’s not certain whose posts are being shown on the homepage, but they’re probably similar to the accounts being followed, offering a curated selection based on the user’s preferences.

“We hope that the TikTok community will use TikTok Notes to continue sharing their moments through photo posts. Whether documenting adventures, expressing creativity, or simply sharing snapshots of one’s day, the TikTok Notes experience is designed for those who would like to share and engage through photo content.” TikTok shares on X.

TikTok announced this new photo-sharing app earlier in April via a notification sent to its users.

While public testing is underway in Canada and Australia, it remains uncertain when TikTok Notes will be released in New Zealand and other regions.

Other social media platforms have been noticeably trying to keep pace with TikTok’s short-form video format. Take Meta’s Reels and Snapchat’s Story as examples. Now, with Notes, TikTok seems to be turning the tables and copying some elements in return.
