Meta’s Threads has overtaken Elon Musk’s X in worldwide daily mobile active users, fresh Similarweb data reveals.

The app hit 141.5 million daily users on iOS and Android by 7 January 2026, topping X’s 125 million, with early January averages showing Threads at 143.2 million against X’s 126.2 million.

Threads surged 37.8 per cent over the past year while X fell 11 per cent. In the U.S., X leads with 21.2 million to Threads’ 19.5 million, but its edge narrowed as Threads grew 41.8 per cent annually. X dominates web traffic at 149.4 million daily visits versus Threads’ mere 8.9 million.

Meta drove growth through Facebook and Instagram promotions, creator tools, and features like communities, reply filters, DMs, long posts, vanishing content, and game tests. The firm reported 400 million monthly users by August 2025, 150 million daily by October, and 320 million total actives by January 2026.

X faces headwinds from Grok AI misuse for non-consensual deepfake nudes, sparking probes by California’s attorney general to open an investigation, like the UK, EU, India, Brazil, and many more. Bluesky saw an increase in downloads amid the row, but Threads is building stronger mobile routines.
