The Thai-Cambodian border has erupted into violence again, despite a ceasefire arranged earlier this year. This renewed conflict shows the fragile nature of peace between the two neighbours.

The latest clashes began when Cambodian forces reportedly fired on a Thai engineering team working in the disputed area, injuring two Thai soldiers. This sparked the evacuation of villages along a long stretch of the border, repeating a painful cycle for local communities.

The ceasefire, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump in July, was fragile from the start. Thailand agreed reluctantly, pressured by looming U.S. tariff negotiations that could impact its key exports. Cambodia, the smaller nation, welcomed international mediation to balance power disparities.

Fighting has persisted, especially due to Cambodia’s continued use of land-mines, which have caused serious injuries to Thai soldiers. Thailand has accused Cambodia of bad faith and refuses to release captured soldiers from earlier clashes.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s government has empowered the military to take a hard line. The Thai army aims to weaken Cambodian forces and secure key strategic heights near the border, strengthening its defensive position.

Cambodian politics also complicate matters. Former Prime Minister Hun Sen, still influential behind the scenes, leaked a confidential conversation involving Thailand’s former PM, intensifying tensions and stirring Thai nationalist sentiment.

While another ceasefire might be possible, unresolved issues such as border demarcation, mistrust, and Cambodia’s use of land-mines hinder lasting peace. Thailand insists on clear signs of Cambodian sincerity before resuming talks.

Until these problems are addressed, the border remains volatile, threatening regional stability and the safety of border communities.
