Apple is reportedly developing a more conversational iteration of its Siri digital assistant by integrating large language models (LLMs), according to a report by Bloomberg citing insider sources.
The integration aims to improve Siri’s functionality, enabling it to engage in more interactive dialogues and manage complex requests, akin to the capabilities demonstrated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
Internally referred to as “LLM Siri,” this upgraded version is currently being tested on iPhones, iPads, and Macs as a standalone application. Apple intends to integrate this new technology into future updates for iOS and macOS, with a potential launch date set for 2025.
However, the enhanced features of Siri are not expected to be included in next year’s hardware releases; instead, Apple plans to make the updated assistant available to consumers by spring 2026.
The revamped Siri will leverage new AI models developed by Apple to facilitate more natural interactions with users. It will also utilise App Intents for improved management of third-party applications and incorporate features from Apple Intelligence, such as text generation and summarisation.
Despite the introduction of Apple’s AI platform in June, substantial changes to Siri are still forthcoming. Current updates mainly focus on cosmetic enhancements, including a refreshed interface and improved user comprehension. Further modifications are anticipated in iOS 18, which will allow Siri to utilise user data for context and actions.
The next-generation LLM for iOS 19 is expected to deliver more advanced functionalities similar to those found in ChatGPT. Additionally, Apple is looking to integrate ChatGPT into its Apple Intelligence framework and plans to introduce other chatbot options like Gemini in the future. This strategy aims to bolster Siri’s capabilities while prioritising user privacy.
Earlier this month, Apple announced its intention to launch a new AI wall tablet as part of its efforts to strengthen its presence in the smart home market.
