Employment website SEEK NZ has revealed that job listings in Gisborne have declined by 33% year on year.

Hawke’s Bay followed closely, experiencing a 31% decrease in ads compared to last year. The next nearest regions were Auckland and Taranaki, each showing a 13% decline in listings year over year.

Among the few that experienced year-on-year job growth are Otago (1%) and Tasman (4%).

Nationwide, job listings decreased by 10% compared to last year but increased by 1% from the previous month. This marks the smallest annual decline since 2022 and the first time in two years that there have been consecutive months of growth.

Meanwhile, the industries experiencing the steepest year-on-year decline in demand were healthcare and medical (-20%), following engineering and insurance and superannuation, both of which saw a 25% drop.

The industry that saw the largest increase in demand was for workers in retail and consumer products, which rose by 10%.

Seek NZ country manager Rob Clark said it is “encouraging” to witness a second consecutive month of overall positive momentum nationwide.

“While we remain cautiously optimistic about these signs of improvement, we know that businesses are still navigating economic uncertainty, as reflected in the ongoing year-on-year decline.”

“However, the recent trend suggests we may be at a stabilising point in the employment market.”
