Samsung continues to set the standard for sustainability in the tech industry, leveraging its Galaxy technology to address pressing environmental challenges.
The tech mogul convened experts from around the globe to discuss how mobile technology can accelerate a more sustainable future at the recent Galaxy Tech Forum on Sustainability. The forum served as a platform to highlight Samsung’s progress, partnerships, and vision for a greener world.
Samsung’s Sustainable Strategy for the Future
Since launching its Galaxy for the Planet initiative in 2021, Samsung has integrated sustainability across its operations, focusing on reducing its environmental footprint through innovative solutions. A key milestone in this effort is the development of the Circular Battery Supply Chain, which repurposes materials from older devices to lessen reliance on newly mined resources.
Samsung has also partnered with Seatrees to support coral reef restoration, while its Generation17 Young Leaders Program empowers youth to address global challenges in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Leading Innovation in Recycled Materials
Samsung is leading the way in sustainable material use with innovations like the Galaxy S25, which contains 50% recycled cobalt in its batteries, sourced from old Galaxy devices.
This initiative reduces the environmental impact of mining while fostering a circular economy. Since 2022, the company has also repurposed over 150 tons of discarded fishing nets into components for its Galaxy devices, contributing to the reduction of ocean plastic pollution.
Advancing Coral Reef Restoration with Technology
Samsung’s commitment to coral reef restoration is being strengthened through a partnership with Seatrees and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, combining cutting-edge technology with environmental efforts.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra, designed for underwater photography, allows local conservationists to capture detailed coral reef data, which is used to generate vital 3D models for restoration work.
“By empowering local partners with mobile tools for precise data collection, we are redefining the role of technology in conservation,” Samsung shared during the forum.
Global Partnerships Driving Sustainable Change
Samsung has numerous collaborations that reinforce its dedication to sustainability, including partnerships with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The Samsung Global Goals App has raised over $20 million to support the UN’s 17 Global Goals, tackling urgent issues like climate change, inequality, and environmental degradation.
Additionally, the company’s Generation17 programme empowers young leaders across the world to drive progress on these Global Goals, highlighting Samsung’s focus on using technology and partnerships to address critical global challenges.
