Perplexity AI recently launched Deep Research tool which is an advanced AI-driven system promises to transform industries like finance, marketing, and technology by automating complex research tasks.

Deep Research conducts iterative searches, analyzes multiple sources, and compiles structured reports in mere minutes.

AI That Thinks Like a Researcher

Deep Research’s core feature is its iterative search process, which allows the AI to refine its queries in real time, adjusting based on new insights.

This continuous adaptation improves the accuracy and relevance of results. Once the research is complete, the tool compiles findings into structured reports, which can be exported as PDFs, documents, or converted into Perplexity Pages for sharing with others.

A Serious Competitor in AI Research

Perplexity Deep Research has demonstrated industry-leading accuracy, outperforming several competing AI models on key benchmarks.

  • 93.9% accuracy on SimpleQA – a benchmark that evaluates AI’s ability to provide factual and reliable answers.
  • 21.1% score on Humanity’s Last Exam – a rigorous test spanning over 100 subjects, including science, mathematics, and history.

Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, emphasized the tool’s efficiency,

“Perplexity Deep Research is quite close to OpenAI o3 on the Humanity Last Exam Benchmark despite being an order of magnitude faster and cheaper. This is possible because DeepSeek is open source and cheap and fast.”

How Perplexity Stacks Up Against ChatGPT

Alban Brooke conducted a side-by-side comparison of Perplexity Deep Research and ChatGPT Pro, showing marked differences in speed and efficiency. When the same prompt was tested, the results highlighted how each tool performed differently.

  • Perplexity was ~9x faster than ChatGPT Pro.
  • Referenced 150% more sources (50 vs. 20).
  • ChatGPT generated a more in-depth but significantly longer response (31 pages vs. 6).

Brooke leaned toward Perplexity for its efficiency, despite ChatGPT’s longer reports,

“If I could only use one of these, it would probably be Perplexity Deep Research.”

Praise for Accuracy and Quality Sources

Early users have praised Deep Research for its high accuracy and well-curated sources. Richard Moore, Head of IT Strategy & Architecture at AJ Bell, shared his experience:

“Wow, this is very very good! I’ve tried a couple of queries, and the results are significantly better than any other research tool I’ve tried. The sources are all high quality too, which is where open-source research tools (e.g., Storm) fail.”

Free with Limitations but Premium for Power Users

Perplexity Deep Research is available for free with limited queries per day. However, Pro subscribers gain unlimited access to the tool. It is currently accessible on web, iOS, Android, and Mac.
