OpenAI has officially launched its new reasoning model, o3-mini, which is now integrated into ChatGPT and its API services. The launch comes just as CEO Sam Altman had hinted two weeks prior, stating that o3-mini would be available within “a couple of weeks.” For the first time, a version of this model with usage limits will be accessible to free users of ChatGPT.

Initially introduced during OpenAI’s “12 Days of Ship-mas” event in December, o3-mini aims to deliver performance on par with the previous model, o1, particularly in areas such as mathematics, programming, and scientific inquiries. OpenAI claims that o3-mini will provide responses that are 24% quicker than those from o1-mini, along with improved accuracy. Similar to its predecessor, this new model will also display its reasoning process alongside the final answers it generates.

In December, OpenAI shared early benchmarks indicating that the o3 model outperformed o1 in various tasks. The company now asserts that the o3-mini will excel over o1 in numerous coding and reasoning challenges while being more cost-effective and efficient. Developers can access o3-mini through several OpenAI API services, including the Chat Completions API, Assistants API, and Batch API.

For paid subscribers, there will be an option to select o3-mini-high, which OpenAI describes as the “best coding option in ChatGPT.” This variant is designed to deliver more sophisticated responses, albeit with slightly longer generation times. Additionally, o3-mini incorporates search functionalities to retrieve answers along with relevant web links.

This development follows closely on the heels of Microsoft making o1 available for all Copilot users and the recent emergence of DeepSeek. Free users can try out o3-mini by selecting the Reason feature in the chat interface; usage limits will align with those of the existing GPT-4o model.

Moreover, today marks the global availability of o3-mini for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro users. OpenAI has also increased message limits for Plus and Team users to 150 messages per day. Only Pro users, who subscribe at $200 monthly, will enjoy unlimited access to o3-mini.

Microsoft has also announced that o3-mini will also be accessible through its Azure OpenAI Service and GitHub Copilot.
