ChatGPT maker OpenAI has announced its first acquisition, US-based enterprise analytics firm Rockset, to “power our retrieval infrastructure across products.”

“AI has the opportunity to transform how people and organisations leverage their own data. That’s why we’ve acquired Rockset, a leading real-time analytics database that provides world-class data indexing and querying capabilities,” OpenAI shared in a Friday blog post.

This acquisition is significant for OpenAI’s enterprise products, as Rockset’s technology could boost performance and bring more refined data analysis tools to OpenAI. The acquisition could also lead to OpenAI enhancing its search engine capabilities, potentially positioning ChatGPT as a stronger competitor in its field.

“Rockset’s infrastructure empowers companies to transform their data into actionable intelligence. We’re excited to bring these benefits to our customers by integrating Rockset’s foundation into OpenAI products,” said OpenAI COO, Brad Lightcap.

While the terms of the acquisition remain unconfirmed, sources indicate that OpenAI acquired Rockset in a stock deal valued at several hundred million dollars. According to sources, Rockset was last valued at $86 billion in a tender offer by investors earlier this year.

“We’re excited to be joining OpenAI to empower users, enterprises, and developers to fully leverage their data by bringing powerful retrieval to AI,” said Venkat Venkataramani, CEO of Rockset.

Additionally, members of Rockset’s team will be joining OpenAI. Rockset also assures that existing customers will experience no abrupt changes and that the transition for current customers will be a smooth and moderate process.

More from OpenAI

On May 13, OpenAI introduced GPT-4o, the company’s flagship model that offers GPT-4-level intelligence “but is much faster and improves on its capabilities across text, voice, and vision.”

GPT-4o can turn ChatGPT into a personal assistant capable of engaging in spoken conversations, viewing photos, documents, or screenshots uploaded by users, and discussing them. This new version of ChatGPT also has memory capabilities, allowing the tool to learn from previous conversations with users and perform translation in real-time.

Earlier this month, Sarah Friar joined OpenAI as chief financial officer, leading a finance team that provides continuous investment in its core research capabilities and ensures OpenAI can scale its operations to meet the growing demands of its customer base and the complex global environment it operates in.

Along with Friar, Kevin Weil was also introduced as the company’s new chief product officer. Weil leads a product team that is focused on applying the company’s AI research to develop products and services that benefit consumers, developers, and businesses.
