One in four new employees is not satisfied with their onboarding experience, a report released by onboarding platform Enboarder has revealed.

“This report clearly shows the experiences we have when we start a new job have a huge impact on employer brand, employee experience, and performance,” Enboarder chief executive Dan Finnigan expressed in a statement.

The report conducted a survey involving over 1,000 employees from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia to assess the current landscape of employee onboarding.

The majority of respondents indicated that they felt very informed (26%) and mostly confident (38%) throughout their onboarding process.

However, 19% of employees described their recent onboarding experience as “meh,”  while 5% found it to be disappointing or unsatisfactory.

31% said their onboarding process lasted within a week, while 21% said it lasted within a day.

The report indicated that remote and hybrid workers face greater challenges during the onboarding process. 42% of remote hires reported “truly terrible onboarding experience,”  followed closely by hybrid workers at 39%.

24% of employees who had a terrible onboarding experience said they felt disengaged. 33% regretted accepting the role, and 30% held a pessimistic view of the work environment.

25% of the respondents also shared their negative experience with others.

“Leaving onboarding to chance is a huge risk considering the massive investment companies make when it comes to recruitment,” Finnigan said.

Meanwhile, employees with a positive onboarding experience said they felt more engaged (42%). 46% said they were happy to accept the job, 34% felt motivated to stay longer at the company, and 32% said they would likely recommend the company as one of the great places to work.

To help companies create a strong onboarding program, the report has also surveyed the participants on the factors that make a good onboarding experience. They are:

  • Stronger communications
  • People connections
  • Onboarding before the official start date
  • Efficient paperwork management
  • Information and engagement
  • Cultural integration; and,
  • Connection and support

The 2024 Enboarder State of Employee Onboarding Survey was carried out by Enboarder from June 25 to June 27, 2024.
