In her new role as Minister for Economic Growth, Nicola Willis has identified increasing tourism numbers as a top priority for New Zealand’s economic strategy.
Speaking on Morning Report, Willis emphasised her focus on strategies to enhance the economy to make New Zealand an attractive place to live and invest in the future.
Willis indicated the need for reforming rules and regulations to make the country a more appealing destination for investment. “We want people with wealth and with skills for our software and gaming industry to come to New Zealand,” she said.
“We want to welcome them—we need to bring in that money and get dollars circulating in our economy.”
“We will not get rich by selling to ourselves,” Willis added.
Willis is also actively collaborating with Immigration Minister Erica Stanford to expedite the visa application process to facilitate easier access for international visitors. She noted that enhancing partnerships with international airlines would also play a crucial role in driving up tourist numbers.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has appointed Nicola Willis as the new Minister for Economic Growth during a recent cabinet reshuffle, a role she will hold alongside her existing position as Finance Minister.
The Prime Minister is said to have personally requested Willis take on the responsibilities.
“Her focus will be on leading the government’s growth agenda to unleash the potential of our businesses to grow, develop talent, and attract investment. That will mean coordinating and strengthening efforts that are already underway to deliver economic growth—and taking responsibility for new initiatives designed to promote growth and productivity in the New Zealand economy,” Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said, expressing trust in Willis’ capability to commit herself to ensure rapid growth for Kiwi businesses in 2025.
