Nepal has named Sushila Karki, the country’s first female interim prime minister, following violent protests that left over 50 dead and more than 1,300 injured. The former Chief Justice was sworn in by President Ramchandra Poudel on Friday in a historic ceremony.

The unrest began with demonstrations against a social media ban, corruption, and poor governance. Police reported deaths of protesters, officers, prisoners, and others, while around 13,500 inmates fled from prisons nationwide, with over 12,500 still on the run. Some escapees attempted to cross into India, where many were detained.

A constitutional expert told Reuters, “They [Gen Z] want [Karki]. This will happen today.”

Youth protesters see her as a strong anti-corruption figure, although her support is mixed. Karki is not currently in parliament, but an agreement to dissolve it reportedly allows her appointment.

Nepal, situated between India and China, has faced instability since ending its monarchy in 2008. As Kathmandu begins to return to normal, grieving families mourn those lost.

Karki’s appointment seeks to address corruption and ease political divisions, but Nepal’s future remains uncertain.
