Elon Musk has announced the creation of a new political party in the United States called the “America Party,” indicating a shift in his political stance after a public fallout with President Donald Trump.
Musk made the announcement on the social media platform X, after a poll he conducted showed nearly two-thirds of respondents supported forming a new party to challenge the entrenched two-party system.
Musk plans to focus the America Party’s efforts on a small number of key congressional races—targeting two or three Senate seats and eight to ten House districts. He believes winning these seats could give the party the balance of power, allowing it to influence legislation to better reflect the will of ordinary Americans.
Previously a major donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign and head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk’s relationship with Trump deteriorated over disagreements about Trump’s recent domestic spending bill.
Musk criticised the legislation as reckless and warned it would increase the national debt by trillions, calling it “massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending” that would lead to “debt slavery.”
Trump dismissed Musk’s new party as “absurd” and threatened to reconsider federal contracts benefiting Musk’s businesses. Despite the challenges third parties face in the U.S., Musk’s wealth and influence could make the America Party a notable force in the 2026 midterm elections.
The party’s platform emphasises fiscal responsibility and reducing government waste, appealing to moderate voters disillusioned with both major parties. While its future remains uncertain, the America Party marks a rare attempt to disrupt America’s longstanding two-party dominance and shows growing divisions within the political establishment.
