A widely enjoyed selection of Speirs Foods brand salads and Woolworths brand coleslaw have been urgently withdrawn from supermarkets throughout New Zealand because of a potential contamination with metal filings.

The affected products are available for purchase at Fresh Choice, New World, PAK’nSAVE, and Woolworths supermarkets.

The recall covers Woolworths brand Classic Coleslaw, available in 250g and 450g plastic containers with use-by dates of September 5 and September 6, 2025, along with a variety of ready-to-eat salads sold by weight at deli counters between August 27 and August 29.

New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) said it supports the recall.

“If you have any affected products, don’t eat them. You can return it to the place of purchase for a refund. If that’s not possible, throw it out,” New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said.

“The concern with metal filings is that they could cause injury.”

So far, NZFS said no injuries related to this issue have been reported.

“As is our usual practice, NZFS will work with Spiers Foods to understand how this happened and prevent its recurrence.”

Retailers have been directed to display point-of-sale notices for a duration of one month to notify customers about the recall.
