Meta is making giant strides in its artificial intelligence initiatives, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicting that 2025 will be a transformative year for the company. He anticipates that Meta’s AI assistant will reach over 1 billion users, which could position itself as the leading AI assistant in the industry.
“In AI, I expect that this is going to be the year when a highly intelligent and personalised AI assistant reaches more than 1 billion people,” Zuckerberg stated during a recent earnings call.
To support these ambitious goals, Meta plans to invest between $60 billion and $65 billion in capital expenditures focused on AI infrastructure. The investment aims to boost the company’s capabilities in developing generative AI technologies, which are crucial for optimising advertising and improving user engagement across its platforms.
“We are at the forefront of the next big technological wave,” he added.
Despite the optimism surrounding Meta’s AI strategy, challenges remain. Recent developments from Chinese startup DeepSeek have raised concerns within the tech community. DeepSeek’s new model reportedly requires significantly less computing power and investment compared to established technologies, leading some analysts to question whether Meta’s approach may appear “bloated.”
In response to these challenges, Zuckerberg acknowledged DeepSeek’s innovations, stating that they have done “a number of novel things” that could be beneficial for Meta’s systems. Nevertheless, he remains confident that Meta’s investments will yield long-term advantages as it continues to refine its AI capabilities.
Furthermore, Meta is also restructuring its workforce, planning a 5% reduction that aims to improve operational efficiency and promote new talent. Meta estimates first-quarter sales for 2025 between $39.5 billion and $41.8 billion.
