Meta shifts from “Made with AI” labels to “AI Info” after receiving complaints from social media users that the company mistakenly flags photos and images created without using generative AI models.
“We want people to know when they see posts that have been made with AI. Earlier this year, we announced a new approach for labelling AI-generated content. An important part of this approach relies on industry standard indicators that other companies include in content created using their tools, which help us assess whether something is created using AI,” Meta stated in a post.
“We’ve found that our labels based on these indicators weren’t always aligned with people’s expectations and didn’t always provide enough context. For example, some content that included minor modifications using AI, such as retouching tools, included industry standard indicators that were then labelled “Made with AI.” While we work with companies across the industry to improve the process so our labelling approach better matches our intent, we’re updating the ‘Made with AI’ label to ‘AI info’ across our apps.”
When tapped, the “AI Info” note will offer an explanation of how artificial intelligence may have been involved in creating the image. While Meta is not changing the existing technology and approach being used to detect the use of AI in photos, the revised wording is expected to soften the impact of the tags, ensuring that users who have made only minor adjustments, such as retouching, won’t face criticism for posting AI-generated content.
The changes are being launched to all users across Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
