Meta has introduced a new video editing application named Edits, following the removal of ByteDance’s CapCut from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store as part of the TikTok ban.

The announcement was made on Sunday by Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, who shared details about the app on Threads.

The Edits app is set to debut next month on iOS, with an Android version anticipated to follow shortly thereafter. Mosseri indicated that the company is collaborating with selected creators to refine the app based on their feedback.

In his announcement, Mosseri stated, “Today we’re announcing a new app called ‘Edits,’ for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone. There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators.”

The app will feature an array of creative tools, including:

  1. A dedicated inspiration tab
  2. A section for organising ideas
  3. A high-quality camera for video capture
  4. The capability to share draft creations with friends or collaborators

Additionally, creators will have access to performance insights regarding their videos shared on Instagram after publication. Mosseri also noted that Edits is designed primarily for creators rather than casual users, a distinction that may be difficult to quantify.

Historically, Meta has reacted swiftly to fill market gaps. For example, in June 2020, when TikTok was banned in India, Meta launched Instagram Reels shortly thereafter. In 2023, Threads was introduced as a competitor to text-based platforms like X. The company seems to recognise that many video creators will seek alternative tools in light of CapCut’s absence. Even if CapCut returns, the ongoing uncertainty may present opportunities for other applications.

Earlier this month, the video editing app Captions, backed by a16z, transitioned to a freemium model in an effort to attract more users and compete with CapCut.
