Melania Trump made history on Monday by chairing a United Nations Security Council session in New York focused on the plight of children caught in conflicts, particularly their access to education, even as U.S. forces continued airstrikes in Iran that have drawn widespread condemnation.

Addressing diplomats from around the world, the First Lady stressed education’s power to build tolerance and lasting peace. This was no ordinary appearance. As the spouse of a world leader, she became the first to preside over such a meeting, representing the United States during its monthly rotation as council president.

She also extended heartfelt condolences to families of American service members killed in action, without specifying any operations.

“Their bravery and dedication will always be remembered,” she said. “I extend my earnest wishes for a swift and smooth recovery to all those who have been injured. You are in my thoughts and prayers during these challenging times.”

Echoing her Be Best advocacy for children worldwide, she added, “The U.S. stands with all of the children throughout the world. I hope soon peace will be yours.”

Announced late last month by the White House, the event highlighted stark UN statistics: more than 472 million children endure war zones with schooling routinely shattered. UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo reinforced the point, noting recent regional disruptions.

“When conflicts erupt, children are among those most severely affected,” she said. “We have been reminded of this truth over the last two days. Schools in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman have closed and moved to remote learning owing to the ongoing military operations in the region.” She cited reports from Iran about an elementary school strike.

Iran claims a U.S. or Israeli attack hit a primary school in Minab on Saturday, killing 153. Tehran blamed both nations. Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani decried the timing beforehand. “It is deeply shameful and hypocritical that on the very first day of its presidency of the Security Council, the United States convened a high-level meeting on protecting children.”

The U.S. Central Command is investigating, while Israel denied involvement. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, “The United States will not deliberately target a school.” The debate echoes UNSC Resolution 2601, urging child protections amid a 40 per cent rise in Iranian civilian deaths since January.
